Curious Kids · Lesson 12 of 12
Be a Smart AI Explorer
Put it all together and make your own AI rules with a grown-up.
Safety tip: Your AI rules card. · Pip is a pretend AI, for practice
Story time

NarratorIt was raining again. Noor and Theo were back in Grandad Joe's workshop.
TheoWe've learned so much about AI. I can't fit it all in my head!
NoorThen let's write it down. But what should we write?

OwlHoo! Let's look back. AI is a tool. It learns from examples. It can be wrong.
OwlAsk clear questions. It isn't a friend. Keep secrets safe. Look for fakes. Be honest. Spot AI all around you.
OwlAnd two more: AI should be fair to everyone, and your own brain does the learning.
NoorThat's a lot of good stuff! Can we turn it into rules?

PipBeep! Rule one: always listen to Pip, because Pip knows everything!
TheoNice try, Pip. You told us penguins can fly!
PipOh. Good point. Maybe rule one is: check what Pip says.

OwlMake your rules in your own words. Then show them to a grown-up.
Grandad JoeThat's a fine rules card. Shall we sign it together and stick it by the computer?

NarratorTheo put Pip gently on the shelf, next to the jars of screws.
PipRemember, I'm a pretend AI, for practice. You two are real explorers now!
NoorBye for now, Pip. See you next time.
Make your own AI rules
A rule is something you agree to do, every time. Good rules keep you safe and help you choose well.
You already know lots of good AI rules. You learned them in the last eleven adventures.
Now make them yours. For each part of the card, pick the words you like best. They are all good choices!
When you finish, you can print your card and share it with a grown-up.
Your rules card holds everything you learned, in your own words.
When AI surprises you
Sometimes AI says something surprising. Like penguins can fly, or a shark is in the pool!
Don't panic, and don't rush. Smart explorers have a plan.
First stop. Then think. Then check with a grown-up or a good book. Then decide what to do.
Stop, think, check, then decide. That's the smart explorer's plan.
Try it: Sign your rules card

Do this with a grown-up. Make your AI rules official, together.
- Print your rules card from the certificate page (after your last sticker), or copy it onto paper in your best writing.
- Read each rule out loud with your grown-up. Talk about what it means.
- Add one family rule together, if you like.
- Both of you sign the card. Use initials or a squiggle, not a full name.
- Stick it near the family computer or tablet, where everyone can see it.
You can decorate it too. A drawing of Pip on the shelf is a nice touch.
Optional. Just for fun.

For grown-ups
What your child learned
This lesson pulls the whole section together: AI is a tool without feelings, it learns from examples and can be confidently wrong, clear and kind questions help, private details stay private, fakes exist, AI help should be admitted honestly, and AI is quietly choosing things in many everyday apps. Your child chose their own wording for a family AI rules card and practised a simple plan for surprising answers: stop, think, check, decide.
Talk about it
- Which rule on your card do you think is the most important? Why?
- What would you do if an app or a chatbot told you something really surprising?
- Is there a rule you think grown-ups should follow too?
A five-minute activity
Sign the rules card together and put it by the family computer or tablet. Add one family rule of your own, such as "we ask before downloading a new app".
Safety notes
A rules card works best when grown-ups follow it too. The card asks for no names; initials or a squiggle are enough. Most AI assistants have minimum ages, often 13 or older, so a grown-up should do any typing into real AI tools.
If this worries your child
If the list of rules feels like a lot, keep it simple: AI is a helpful tool, it can be wrong, and a grown-up is always there to check with. Rules are about feeling confident, not scared.
Curious Kids has no accounts and collects nothing: progress and stickers stay on this device. More in the grown-ups guide.
